never published & wonderfully optimistic, 05/05/24, Our first weekend in New Hampshire.

There’s so much to say about the last several months, I don’t know where to begin and how to edit, but here are the big ideas.

The move to New Hampshire was the best choice for us. We love it here, embrace the easier lifestyle, and look forward to exploring the diverse natural landscape around us. An Oregonian at birth, I’ve been longing to “get back to the trees” for over 3 decades, and often comment that this is likely the closest I’ll get to calling the PNW home again.

Lisa’s cancer health journey continues as she faces the mounting challenges with incredible dignity and strength. What started last year as a sprint and call to action has been followed by acceptance that this is a marathon requiring patience and ongoing fortitude. It’s humbling for both of us but we remain hopeful and deeply loving to one another. She is receiving excellent care here and the convenience of our location in relation to the services she requires is a true win. For me in particular, being able to accommodate the numerous needs around her care while maintaining a job and my own health is huge.

Everything is new, which has been fun and stimulating. I’m past needing GPS for the routines of driving to work, shopping and getting around locally, but have a long way to go to really understand the local topography. The shapes created by the numerous waterways, islands and bridges provide for an interesting, albeit non-intuitive driving experience. There is substantially less traffic here and marked by a preponderance of large pickup trucks and motorcycles. New Hampshire’s moto “Live Free or Die” includes helmet optional laws. It’s a shock at first to see so many people riding without helmets and blaring 80s Metal. Testament to the demographic shift.

Nature abounds. It’s stunning here and we’ve barely scratched the surface. Hiking will be a growing joy for us and we’re excited to do some kayaking. For me, I’m eager to ski this winter after two seasons off the snow and know it will be a solid incentive to get Dante up to visit as well.
